Tribute to Alexander McQueen

Unnaturally skilled; unnatural death. Alexander McQueen, fashion designer, will rest as one of the true contemporary innovators and visionaries of the fashion industry, manipulating old and new ideas into immaculately tailored collections that speak of his years of Savile Row training and work for renowned fashion houses such as Givenchy.

His collections, often deemed twisted and tormented by fashion's elite, seemed to reveal his inner turmoil in his personal life, though season after season, the designer continued to push the envelope of acceptability and wearability. Even as he was criticized, he was adored. And even as he was deemed shocking, his designs revealed absolute commercial viability.

The serpentine image we included was shot by the brilliant Nick Knight for McQueens spring/summer 2010 campaign.

Our Favorite Holiday Window Shopping 2009

It's the perfect time of year to be window shopping. The holidays bring about the most creative window displays we've ever seen and we always look forward to seeing the visual beauty of the season through retail eyes. Here are a few of our favorite windows from top to bottom:

Bergdorf's NYC has outdone themselves with a frozen crystalline display worthy of an ice queen.

Harrod's of London went with the Wizard of Oz for the holidays and nothing says Merry Christmas more than the Wicked Witch of the West's fashionable red pumps!

We love the way Saks Fifth Avenue in New York integrated social media into a children's fairy tale theme this season. A listed number could be used to Twitter a message for all viewers to see. Ingenious!

Barneys NY took a comedic approach by paying homage to Saturday Night Live with Tina Fey and The Coneheads as display material.

Worn so well by the street models shown here, each of them gave us a renewed sense of fun for getting dressed in the morning. We're always coming across amazing statement shoes that get our pulses racing. And they usually come with an equally aspirational price tag to boot. But newcomer and current press darling Camilla Skovgaard's Chastity Wrap Sandal bucks the mold. Using a beautiful grey Italian croc-embossed Italian nappa leather, the Danish designer has molded a keenly-styled strappy sandal at an unbelievable price. Wrapping around the most flattering part of the leg, we'll want to wear these with skinny denim and leggings with opaque tights and all of our fall tunics and dresses we can imagine. We love its subtle new color - a welcome change from the black basic. And we love that it can enhance any holiday party dress without clashing. 3 Ways to Autumnize Your Fall/Winter Wardrobe

1. Jersey Layering
The key focus to fall is layering. These days, layering pieces come in many different cozy fabrics. Silk jersey, cashmere jersey, wool jersey, cotton jersey, and modal jersey, to name a few. Layering items are an easy way to add warmth in layers to your ensemble … Plus they don’t wrinkle, are machine washable and easy to pack for trips. And the best reason … They comfortable.

2. Belt It!
Add dimension to your layering pieces by belting. Whether it’s large corset, skinny or stacking belts, each can add new life to your layering pieces. And belts can be worn on all shapes by strategic placement. Larger busts should belt at the empire waist, hour-glass figures at the waist, and straight shapes around the hips in a drop-waist style. And belts with embellishments can give new detail to basic layering pieces with stud details, cut-out shapes, leather, fringe, etc.

3. Statement Necklaces
Statement necklaces were one of the biggest trends to come out of the fall collections this year and it’s such an easy way to add punch to even your most basic layering pieces. Statement necklaces aren’t just for bold dresses or formal occasions. By adding a chunky necklace to your daily profile, it can instantly pull your outfit together without much effort.

Now to kick up the idea of layerying another notch, grab your blazers, sweater wraps, vests, and capes and belt them as well. Adding a belt to a fur vest (real or faux) or cape gives you a multi-layered new look.

We Like Bike

We're excited to be part of the first wave of Downtown local businesses to support Everyonebikes.org in Columbus. It's a collaborative bike share program with participating retailers. We just bought our first bike and took it for a spin! It's the perfect way to get around the Short North (with basket for your purchases), not to mention an easy and conscious way to lower our carbon profile. So far, 10 shops Downtown have signed up in the first wave with 50 more hopefuls by summer's end.

Over the weekend at Gallery Hop, Tigertree hosted a press preview to discover more about the bike share program, including Mayor Michael Coleman.

Loaning a bike at participating shops is complimentary and easy. Each shop provides lock and key. 2-hour time blocks for use. Riders must complete a simple form and waiver of liability provided at each participating retailer. Riders can take a bike, run errands, visit the various retailers throughout our neighborhood, stop and enjoy food/drink/shopping and return the bike for others to enjoy. Super simple.

Anna Sui will debut a collection for Target for fall inspired by TV's Gossip Girl. Although designer collaborations with Target have been appealing, the actual designs and offerings have been dismal, usually affected by cheap fabric and poor quality. This is the first collaboration with Target that we're excited to preview and look forward to seeing in stores. The collection stays true to Anna's aesthetic and looks richly colorful for fall. Among the red carpet elite, Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell and Sally Ride, Jessica Szohr of Gossip Girls fame, dazzled in a boho chic ensemble that may elevate her to new It Girl status. Working a lace dress by Anna Sui for Target (not available until September), Femme for DKNY scarf cardigan, Temperley London military jacket, and Louis Vuitton heels, the young celebrity looked effortlessly chic and sent style bloggers furiously to their computers to blog about her look for the evening.

Zillions of women have issues with summer dressing. Whether you're missing a tan, added a few extra pounds, or complain about the wrong muscle tone, we understand. But we can keep cool and still dress cleverly this summer.

1. Pesky Pounds
If you want to camouflage those pesky pounds, you can still wear black and tell everyone you’re doing seasonless dressing. Black trousers might seem dull, but not if you focus on slim, ankle-length or above-ankle shapes in lustrous fabrics such as silk. For example, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s karate harem pants. And then add color to your top half. Certain brights like yellow, orange, fuchsia tend to look grim on pale skin, but red, emerald and cobalt look dramatic. Try Ports 1961 red boat neck top.

2. A Lighter Shade of Pale
Take the color white. This is the shade of the season every spring/summer, but it can make pale skin look washed-out. If you want pale, go for putties, greys and palest nude pinks – this summer’s most fashionable color – and layer them to subtle, charming effect. 3. Arms

4. Fluidity vs Tailoring

The unofficial fashion show as far as we're concerned and it happens in NY every spring at the Costume Met Benefit Gala. Tonight, models, celebrities, designers, and industry icons convene dressed in their most forward fashion best. This year was no exception. Rihanna performed, Bono gave a speech and Kanye made another fashion appearance.

We aspire to look as dazzling as Kate Moss, as fierce as Stella McCartney in all lace, as glamorous and relevant as Shalom Harlow (completely covered and confident), as long and sophisticated as Ashley Olsen, as coquette as Diane Kruger, and as strong as Jessica Biel. We love all the independent ladies!

We can't wait for Andrea Lieberman's new collection for spring 2009. The line was chock full of wearable must-haves. Known as a stylist-to-the-stars (Gwen Stefani and Nicole Richie to name a few), Andrea has been a styling veteran for years and her first debut collection for spring '09 is sure to be a hit.

Her well-edited group of looks inspires us to add updated pieces to our wardrobe; timeless choices with thoughtful, modern touches and witty styling details.

We loved her striped maxi dress, long Grecian T-shirt dress, black strapless trapeze dress, simple black skort, and skinny trousers, among many others. There were simply too many standout pieces as well as stable staples made of sumptuous natural fabrics like cashmere, tissue thin cotton, silk, and wool.

Look for it come February 2009!

Preview of Spring 2009 Trends

We're always excited to see the new trends to come down the runway during fashion weeks around the world. Here's a preview of what's to come for next season:

From New York, we saw lots of transparency and muted tones. The color nude was a big hit with many designers from everything to dresses, skirts and tops.

London constantly presents promising new talent during fashion week and we loved Brunello Cucinelli whose safari theme and menswear inspirations conjured the perfect new spring jacket: a grey cotton tailcoat made of sweatshirt fabric. Emma Cook, Stella McCartney (Stella's simple black, white, nude, and muted sea palette was stunning. We loved the idea of the oversized men's blazer worn over everything from dresses to leggings and tapered pants), and Alexander McQueen are constant faves. Along with other fashion insiders, we think Christopher Kane is a talent to watch.

Milan was all about fluidity, fringe and fun. Our favorite was Jill Sander's fringed creations which were intricate and expertly executed. We can't help but think of Italy and also think of sensuous sex appeal and Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci examined this idea with opposites: close to the body classic sexiness and tailored separates built for confident women.

Paris played with minimalism on one end to color and eccentricity on the other. References were varied but some of our favorites were Dries Van Noten with an incredibly wearable collection, to Ann Demeulemeester's Grecian layers and Aussie Martin Grant for his usual understated and unfussy glamour.
